The medieval, proud city of King Krešimir "Sibenik" is one of the largest metropolises in the north of the Dalmatia region alongside Zadar. It offers guests interested in culture numerous museums, galleries and historical sights such as the St. Anna Fortress, which towers over Sibenik and is also known as the Mihovil Fortress by the locals.
The centre extends around the well-protected harbour. Sibenik is roughly divided into the western part with its narrow streets and the newer neighbourhood in the north and south-east of the city. This is also where most of Sibenik's holiday homes are located.
The old town centre of Sibenik is home to numerous churches, monasteries and palaces - the enchanting cultural heritage of a thousand years of important history. One of these historic buildings is the Cathedral of St James, whose 100-year construction period is proof of how important faith was and is for the people of Sibenik.
Many important artists, scientists and writers were represented in Sibenik and turned the city into a lively cultural centre. You can gain an insight into this period in the Sibenik Monastery, where over 150 incunabula and important writings are on display.
Another special feature of Sibenik is its unique location along the Krka River. Sibenik is only connected to the sea by a narrow strait. Visually, you get the impression that there is only a large lake in front of Sibenik. However, if you travel by boat through the narrow estuary into the open sea, you will discover a multitude of beautiful islands such as Zlarin, Obonjan, Zirje, Koprije and many more.
